Metalworked at Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts in Spring, Texas Members of the Houston Area Blacksmith's Association (HABA) and the Houston Metal Arts Guild (HMAG) are invited to show their work as part of an educational program in association with the new Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts in Spring, TX. The Pearl Musuem is opening in March of 2008 and is a new concept for museums. The purpose of Metalworked is to demonstrate the connection of the forging craft as expressed by jewelers and blacksmiths from precious metals through iron and steel. The second show at the Pearl Museum will open in July 2008. This show will be African gold from the famous Glassell Collection on loan from the Houston Museum of Fine Arts . This will be a 14 week show and HABA and HMAG members have an opportunity to display their work in a focus gallery directly behind the main gallery. A 'room divider' type wall separates the two galleries and will give visitors an immediate visual connection of the forging crafts as expressed in all kinds metals. HABA and HMAG will also colaborate to create teaching displays. Here are a couple of ideas being bounced around. One would be a static display of hammers from tiny jeweler's hammers to striking hammers. Another is a display of metal samples, pieces of sheet or bar visitors can touch. And, another may be a copper interpretation of one of the gold pieces showing the forging process. All additional ideas are welcome at this time. There is not much time to bring this show together. So, here is the plan today. By May 30 HABA and HMAG need to have the paperwork and photos of all work submitted for the show in hand. The show will not be juried in the usual sence. The selection process will be similar to the one we used in 2004 when HABA had a show at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, a joint effort among the museum, HABA and HMAG representatives. The paperwork still needs to be developed so it is not now available. Photos can be as simple as snap shots and in hard copy or digital form. Work for the show can be from two sources. The first source is member's work. A second source is work by those who influenced the the member. For example a person could submit a vessel he or she made and a set of Yellin andirons. The selection of items for the show will take place in early June. Delivery of the selected work to the museum would be early July. Pickup of the work from the museum would be early November. The musuem would like to have two particular pieces of work. One is something to be displayed outside. The other is a large piece like a gate, grill or headboard to be displayed on the wall and to act as a focal point. There will be a lot of questions. Please get your questions to Dave Koenig. He will get you an answer. Dave's contact information is: tudorforge@sbcglobal.net, home phone, 281-855-2869 and cell, 281-799-3216. Check back to this web page for updates.
