ANIMAL HEAD HAMMER-IN

Tee Heads
with

Tee Hines

at Bucksnort Forge
in Magnolia

March and April was a very busy time in the region, and especially with HABA which plowed full speed through both months with Tee Hines at the head ot the team! The season may have concluded with Depot Day in Magnolia on April 21. Next, we will head out to Tee's wonderful country home and forge shop for a demo in his own backyard in Magnolia to forge a couple of kinds of animal heads!

Tee prepared several handouts for us to download as a PDF file. Just cllick on each to download:

Tee is going to start by showing us how to forge a simple horse head on the end of a horseshoe. After we have all mastered the horseshoe, he is going to forge a different horse head using a piece of ¼” x ¾“ flat bar. This head is much like the two dimensional head forged by the Brazeal Brothers. Finally, if time permits, we’ll forge a ram’s head.

Tee Hines and HABA at Bayou Art Fest What to bring:
  • Safety Glasses w/side shields. This is a requirement!
  • Gloves if you use them
  • Forge, coal or propane
  • Fuel for the forge
  • Anvil
  • Vise if you have them.
  • Your favorite forging hammers
  • Tongs to handle a horseshoe and ¾”-1” flat stock
  • A straight chisel and a arched chisel
  • Special punches you might need to add character to the heads you forge. (eye & nose punch)

  • HABA will have available or you can bring your own:
  • 24” of ¼ x ¾ flat bar. You can use 1” instead of ¾ “. (2 dimensional horse head)
  • 24” of 3/8” square bar. (ram’s head)
  • Horseshoe (HABA will have some shoes available)
  • Chair to sit in

Tee Hines PLEASE NOTE: As is the custom at most workshops, sharing tools is common. Please remember to do a couple of things if you borrow a tool. One, remember from whom you borrowed a tool and make sure you return it by telling that person you are returning it. Two, make sure you look over your tools before you depart to make sure you have only what you came with...nothing missing and nothing extra. It takes more effort to return or find a tool than to double check before leaving the meeting!
