Bayou City Art Fest Demo with HABA HABA was invited to demonstrate at the famous Bayou City Art Festival, under the umbrella of the Cultural Arts Center of Houston and Harris County (CACHH). The festival includes over 300 jurried artists in 16 differernt categories, selected from 800 entries. As part of the festival, CACHH organized a section of the festival where craftspeple will demonstrate their craft....no selling...just demonstrating. All sales at the festival are part of a jurried show only. The festival takes place in Memorial Park in the spring and downtown in the fall. HABA was invited to demonstrate from 10 AM to 6 PM March 18 - 19 -20. The 19th is also our monthly meeting in Lake Jackson. If you have some pieces of work you would like to show the public, please contact Dave Koenig. To learn more about the festival go to: http://www.bayoucityartfestival.com/SpringMemorial.html . Here are the volunteer demonstrators and schedules:
The demonstration times were from 10 AM through 5:45 PM each day. The gates opened at 9 AM for setup. Demonstrators could not sell anything. However, they were free to pass out cards and other literature to prospective customers. A Big HABA Thanks to everyone who demonstrated. This was a big deal for HABA! And, it was a lot of fun because everyone had some time to see what is going on at the festival. A few notes from Richard Boswell... This was an extra effort from many HABA Members, especially Dave Koenig who organized this demo event. On Thursday Dave, Frank Walters and I went down in the afternoon and setup the forge gear supplied by Dave and Frank. This was complicated when we did not receive a gate and parking pass for each demonstrator. So we had to develop a plan to handoff these documents from one to crew to the next each evening. We arrived and found we had no tent, at least where it was supposed to be. Fortunately, our host, Joe Wilson, from CACHH arrived and he was able to determine our tent had not been placed where he requested, but was part of the main CACHH camp near the performance stage. We had many display items in the tent, including a gate and scroll example from Gary Evensen, a shovel and fire tool from Dave Mudge, a flower from Dave Koenig, several pieces from Tim Bailey, and other items which were brought each day. One of the attractions was the fuels example that Dave brought with buckets of coal, coke, charcoal, and clinkers. Our forge gear included a bellows from Frank and the manual drill from Dave. Lot's of people were asking about the old Champion Drill mounted to the work table. Evryone brought their own tools and anvils each day. On Friday Dave reported a great demo day and lots of traffic. At least 2,000 attended and the team was busy all day with visitors. James Porter made sure everyone went home with a hand forged nail. Cathy Porter stayed busy meeting visitors in the tent which she did a great job of organizing. Saturday was another great attendence day, and the severe storms held off until the end of the day. It was my pleasure to work alongside Lawrence Childress and Mark Finstad who entertained the many guests all day with hooks and leaves. We got there early and had time to relax before the crowds arrived. (See photos of the last time we got to sit down.) The performance stage featured two sets from the bagpipe/drummers from U of St Thomas and I found that espeically motivating hammer music. The hospitality was always warm and friendly, and the Spring Days were exceptionally fine, and even dramatic. Sunday the weather passed and our team had another great day. We gained a lot of exposure to the public and fulfilled our mission of educating the public. Frank Walters, Rob and Vicki Kirby reported the same high traffic level and interest. Frank and Dave made the rip back Monday morning for equipment pick up. Thanks CACHH for inviting us and we hope we can come back again. Here are some photos from the weekend....
