FALL BLACKSMITH'S FORGE FEST

at
Oldenburg

This Fall we returned with a new event name to our favorite Oldenburg site at HABA Lifetime Member Kennie Hall's place on Antique Show Weekend to have a good time.

Our bi-annual Blacksmith's Hammerfest has become our Forge Fest event at Oldenburg and was held the weekend of October 8. We featured several special regional demonstrators under the New Hall Pavillion on Saturday.

Many attended form HABA and Balcones Forge, and we brought tools and work to sell to other blacksmiths and the public. Our web site for the event is HABA Fall ForgeFest. Our demonstrator agenda changed a couple of times, but we ended up with an absolutely dynamite day of expert demonstrating featuring :
  • Gary Evensen - HABA & Balcones
  • Dan Smith - Balcones
  • Cowboy Szymanski - HABA
  • Dan Smith Encore - Balcones
  • Cowboy Szymanski Encore - HABA
Gary had his Encore ready to go, but it was time for the great bar-b-que feast provided by our hosts, the most gracious Halls. So we requested, and Gary readily agreed, that we could save it for next time!

More information is available at the HABA website for the event Blacksmith's Fall Forge Fest.

Cowboy Szymanski
Cowboy moved his Phenix Knives blacksmith shop to the old time blacksmith shop on Main Street in Bellville in 2004 from Pasadena, and was the resident smith at the Historic George Ranch for several years. After learning the knife making trade from Lee Oates, he has traveled worldwide learning and demonstrating his craft. Cowboy is often found at Old West and Civil War re-enactment camps. This has increased his product line from specialty knives to the many tools often used by the cowboys out on the trail.

Cowboy will be hosting the January 2006 HABA Knife Making Workshop.

Statement

The old world arts have always held a special appeal to me, with knives being the forerunner of my passion. I choose to utilize this time proven old world tradition to design and craft my knives, incorporating skills from the Orient as well as European and American techniques.

Each knife is hand forged and hand crafted as a piece of art that is also functional. Each is one of a kind varying in design, metals, and materials. I offer knives custom made to suit the client's interests. These knives are crafted to last for generations.

Demo

Cowboy provided two demos for the day. The first was forging a special new design horse head finial on small stock. This was completed as a campfire fork.

The second demo of the day was forging an old style hunting knife from scrap spring steel assumed to be 5160.
